Rebuilding after a fire is a personal choice, whether your house is completely destroyed or only damaged. People who choose to recover and rebuild are those who literally rise from their own ashes. You may be able to do some things to make your house a little more fireproof, such as using a steel or tile roof, concrete siding, and fireproof landscaping, but in the end, there’s not much you can do if you’re in a wildfire zone. There are many cases where a wildfire doesn’t actually get closer than a quarter mile and the superheated air and the intense radiant heat are enough to heat parts of a house to the ignition point.

Being in a potential wildfire zone is a personal choice, just as living near hurricane, quake, tornado, or flood zones are. You’re making a choice to be there because it’s a hazard you’re willing to accept.
